Window Basics
The European standard, explained — how a single window tilts inward for secure airflow and swings fully open for cleaning, ventilation and escape.

If you have only ever used windows that slide up or sideways, the tilt-and-turn window can feel like a small revelation. It is the everyday standard across Europe, and for good reason: a single sash, operated by a single handle, opens in two completely different ways depending on which way you turn it.
Three positions, one handle
The magic is in the multi-position handle, which drives a continuous run of hardware around the entire perimeter of the sash:
- Handle down — locked. Every locking point engages at once, pulling the sash tight against compression seals on all four sides for an airtight, weather-tight, secure close.
- Handle horizontal — turn. The sash swings fully inward like a door for maximum airflow, unobstructed views, and easy cleaning of the outside glass from indoors — a real advantage on upper floors.
- Handle up — tilt. The top of the sash leans inward a few inches for gentle, secure ventilation, even in light rain, while the bottom stays anchored to the frame.
Why it outperforms single-hung and sliding windows
Conventional North American windows seal at a single latch and rely on tracks that loosen over time. A tilt-and-turn sash instead clamps shut at multiple points around the frame, compressing continuous gaskets. That difference shows up in three places homeowners notice every day:
- Air-tightness & energy. A tighter seal means less conditioned air leaking out — which is why these windows insulate and resist drafts far better than a typical double-hung.
- Quiet. The same compression seal that blocks air also blocks sound, cutting traffic, mowers and trains down to a murmur.
- Security. Multiple steel locking points distributed around the sash are dramatically harder to force than one central latch.
Built around genuine European hardware
The whole system only works because the frame, sash, seals and hardware are engineered together. Our windows are built on genuine REHAU® profiles with multi-point locking and compression-seal technology — the same components proven across millions of European installations. You can see the mechanism animated, and switch between locked, tilt and turn yourself, in the interactive demo on our homepage.
Where tilt-and-turn shines
Because the sash opens inward, these windows suit tight exterior spaces — over a deck, walkway or patio — where an outswing casement would be in the way. The tilt position is ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms that need steady, secure airflow, while the full turn makes egress and cleaning effortless. They pair naturally with fixed picture units and patio doors for whole-home consistency.
